Human-computer interface and human-computer interaction interface relationship

Human-machine interface (HMI) and human-computer interface are closely related concepts, they are both used to describe the interface and way of interaction between humans and computers, but they are slightly different.

HMI is a broad concept that encompasses a variety of interaction methods between humans and computers, such as touch screens, keyboards, mice, voice recognition, gesture recognition, and so on. It usually consists of computer hardware and software designed to provide human-friendly interfaces and operating methods to meet users' needs.

And HCI is one of the human-computer interfaces, which usually refers to the way and design of interaction between computers and human beings for the purpose of exchanging information, transmitting instructions and realizing tasks. It includes user interface design, interaction design, information architecture, usability testing, etc., aiming to allow users to interact with applications, websites, etc. more efficiently, smoothly and pleasantly.

Human-computer interaction refers to the interaction between a human and a machine, which is essentially the interaction between a human and a computer. Or to understand it more broadly: HCI is the interaction of a human being with a machine containing a computer.

Specifically, the two-way communication between the user of HCI and the machine containing the computer is realized with certain symbols and LCD screens being used as HMI display actions, such as keystrokes, moving the mouse, and displaying symbols/graphics on the screen. This process includes several sub-processes: recognizing the interactive object - understanding the interactive object - grasping the object mood - information adaptation and feedback, etc.; and the human-computer interface refers to the media or means of communication between the user and the machine system containing the computer, is the human-computer bidirectional information interaction support software and hardware.

Here the interface is defined as the media or means of communication, and its physical embodiment is the relevant supporting software and hardware, such as a graphic display terminal with a mouse.

Interaction is a description of the human-machine-environment relationship/condition. Human-computer interface interface is a concrete expression of the interaction between human and machine-environment. Interaction is the contextual portrayal to realize information communication, while interface is the means to realize interaction. In the interaction design subsystem, interaction is the content/soul, and interface is the form/body; however, in the large product design system, interaction and interface are only a means to solve the human-computer relationship, but not the ultimate goal, which is to solve and satisfy human needs.

Interaction design is subordinate to the product system, and is a strong support and improvement for successful product design.

If we utilize the system theory point of view, interaction design is a subsystem of the product design system.

Overall, the concepts of human-computer interface and human-computer interaction are inextricably linked, and they are both important components in making computer applications more usable and easy to use. As with other technologies, continuous innovation and optimization can make HCI more efficient, convenient, intelligent and provide a better user experience.
